Heap leaching is an industrial mining process to extract precious metals, copper, uranium, and other compounds from ore (usually it is low-grade ore) via the lixiviant spray technique which will produce a series of chemical reactions that absorbs specific minerals and then re-separate them from pregnant solution flowed from the heap leaching base after their division from other earth materials.

Tailings are remains from the processing of the ores. A tailings dam is typically an earth-fill embankment dam used to store tailings which are produced in the heap leaching process after separating the valuable fraction.
